Personal
On a personal note, Odyssey Properties and my real estate career came about sheerly out of frustration. Dan and I started with what some would call 'nothing'--no money for a down payment on our first home, no family to borrow from, no real help when it came to understanding loan programs or credit scoring or the buying process and though we had jobs, they weren't classified as high-paying by any means. We were determined, though, and we knew what we wanted: We wanted creative financing--something other than to be told "10% down + closing costs, + three months worth of payments in the bank." We wanted something that needed some work (since we have this love for fixer properties), which really seemed to upset most agents. And most of all, we just wanted a down-to-earth agent that would work with us instead of telling us what we were asking for was the other side of impossible.
What we expected was solutions rather than complications.
What we found back then, however, was that most real estate agents seemed to be from another planet, have their own language (what the heck are all those acronyms supposed to mean anyway?), and be driven by all the things Dan and I weren't. Being 'creative' was "too complicated." We were, to put it gently, "difficult to qualify" and more than once we were told we "wanted the moon."
Today things are much different. We help folks each and every day to buy, sell, and invest in real estate in some very creative and non-traditional ways that other agents either won't or can't seem to do. That's fine, we like challenges! For example, take a look at Greg's letter on the Testimonials page. We helped get him into his first home on a special loan program with less than $17.00 out of his pocket! That first home was sold two years later and we then helped him parlay the equity from that little starter home into a big, beautiful home (the proceeds from the sale of the first home were tax-free--we can show you how to do this as well.) We welcome questions, and will take the time to explain the complicated things.
Dan and I still love ugly houses, and yes, we still seem to butt heads with many of the so called 'super sales agents' in real estate. The difference is we actually live real estate, we don't just sell it (check out the slide show--see what we do for fun?) When we first started out, we went against the tide. In many respects, we still do. And we're proud of it! Shouldn't everyone have a home? We think so! And we know for a fact that anyone--with the proper assistance--can buy a home even if they don't have the "right" set of circumstances working in their favor. Likewise, even under the so-called worst case scenario for selling, there's nearly always a solution that works. Sometimes it simply takes a little more creative approach to finding a solution that works.
